CelcomDigi committed to creating an advanced 5G network

CelcomDigi Bhd has formally submitted its proposal to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for the development of Malaysia's second 5G network, as the MCMC is tasked with selecting a mobile network service provider to develop Malaysia's second 5G network. Its CEO Idham Nawawi highlighted that this proposal, submitted earlier today, demonstrates CelcomDigi's dedication to building a state-of-the-art 5G infrastructure and encouraging its rapid adoption among both consumers and businesses. He also stressed that CelcomDigi is confident that the company's proposal presents a strong case for the deployment of Malaysia's second 5G network, whether independently or in partnership with others, to establish a robust 5G ecosystem for the nation

The company emphasized its capability to carry out a cost-effective, rapid, and efficient rollout of the second 5G network, drawing on more than 30 years of experience in executing large-scale mobile infrastructure projects. CelcomDigi also mentioned leveraging its broad network of global and local technology partners, along with the expertise from its shareholders Axiata and Telenor, to foster rapid innovation in new technology solutions for both consumers and businesses.

Earlier this month, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching stated that mobile network operators (MNOs) participating in the second 5G network project are limited to holding equity in only one entity. She explained that under the agreement between the MNOs and Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), each MNO must choose to invest in either DNB (entity A) or the second 5G network (entity B).

Following the conclusion of the applicant information package process, the successful tenderer will lead entity B, while the other bidders will remain in entity A. Those selected for entity B will need to sell their shares in DNB to ensure the establishment of two distinct entities, Teo clarified in the Dewan Rakyat.
